Exceptional Art Nouveau 3D Silver Overlay Vase, Alvin Mfg

About the Item

Exceptionally rare silver overlay vase by Alvin Mfg Co. of Providence Rhode Island from the late 19th century. This vase is a tour de force of Art Nouveau silver work on glass. The intricate sterling floral base design is overlaid onto the emerald green glass and is finely etched and detailed. Then, above these swirling Art Nouveau florals which wrap around the vase, are vines sprouting three dimensional blown out poppies throughout. Even the vines are treated in three dimensions as they wrap around the central cartouche (conjoined Victorian monogram AEL) and undulate up and down the vase. There are five large poppies applied in varying states of bloom along with smaller buds which sprout from the beautifully textured vines. We have seen silver repousse work from the period in Jewelry and in other forms, but, never in combination with silver overlay and glass. The combination of the "flat" silver work on the vase and the dimensional silver work "above" it creates an incredible depth to this piece which was very likely a special commission as the hand work and labor involved is extraordinary. Marked "Patented G3498, 999/1000 Fine, Alvin Hallmark." Vase measures 10" in height and 6" across at base, 4" at top, circa 1890s USA. Museum/Collector Quality. Excellent condition.
