About the Item
FDV is a collection of sculptural vases that literally emerge from a block of polystyrene. The block is first dissolved from the inside using acetone to create a partially controlled void, into which concrete is poured. As it flows, a thin, fluid layer of the mixture adheres to the rough inner surface.
“The Far Deep Void collection uses synthetic materials to mimic the form of organic matter. The vases are made by creating a spontaneous mold from a block of polystyrene”
— Duccio Maria Gambi
Duccio Maria Gambi maintains a research-storytelling approach where every
work stands as a momentary reflection in an endless research on structures,
materials, processes, time, which he carries on in his actual atelier and studio
in his hometown Florence. Big part of his works revolves around stone,
concrete and the creation of value with poor materials through the artistic
intervention. Winner of Object section at Miart 2017, his work Retrostorico is
since then part of the permanent collection of the Triennale Design Museum.
Far Deep Void S2N2 was part of Dark Times, Bright Signs. “Times have been dark” more than once in history, and “the world has been falling apart” for centuries, countless times, generation after generation. Today, though, dystopia feels particularly realistic—certified, experienced electronically in real-time, and reinforced by scientific theories now accessible to all. Apocalyptic thinking not only surrounds us—it has become mainstream. Driven by this condition of hyperawareness, swept by waves of eco-anxiety, saturated by conflict and forced to face a rapidly-evolving reality —a new generation is developing new languages, perhaps forms of reworking, toward new balances, of hope. At the same time, though, the apocalyptic scenarios around us—or rather, upon us—cannot help but permeate our gaze, consciously or otherwise, shaping the creative language of today and the way we parse the world.
