Face jugs/vases have a rich history, with examples found in ancient Greek, Pre-Columbian American, and early European pottery. In America, particularly in the Southern United States, face jugs/vases became prominently in the 19th century, with significant examples created by enslaved African Americans in places like Edgefield, South Carolina. These pieces are often characterized by their distinctive features, including applied eyes, noses, and mouths.
