About the Item

Figural Brutalist Art Pottery Face Jug/Vase Signed by Artist. An interesting figural brutalist art pottery jug/vase, circa 1970s. It is the bust of a man and has an abstract Picasso influenced look to it. Very cool and different piece. It is in very good condition with no chips or cracks and measures 5.5"W x 5.5"D x 11"H. #4681RM Face jugs/vases have a rich history, with examples found in ancient Greek, Pre-Columbian American, and early European pottery. In America, particularly in the Southern United States, face jugs/vases became prominently in the 19th century, with significant examples created by enslaved African Americans in places like Edgefield, South Carolina. These pieces are often characterized by their distinctive features, including applied eyes, noses, and mouths. While the exact original purpose of the slave-made jugs remains debated, they are considered significant folk art and cultural artifacts. An extremely interesting piece!
