History & Biography: Fratelli Toso
The Fratelli Toso are the founders of a glass factory still operating today on Murano Island, near Venice.
In 1854, the six sons of Pietro Toso (Ferdinando, Carlo, Liberato, Angelo, Giovanni, and Gregorio) established a small glassworks at a time when Murano’s glass industry was in decline following Napoleonic occupation. Their talent and innovation quickly brought them recognition at Vienna exhibitions in 1865 and 1869, as well as at shows in Venice, Paris, Milan, Treviso, Trento, and the Vatican.
By the late 19th century, after the founders passed away, the company became Antica Vetreria Fratelli Toso in 1901, managed by Lorenzo and Nicolo Toso. The business expanded, employing around 30 workers.
Following World War I, the company was restructured and reached 90 employees. Under the third generation (Ermanno, Michele, and Aldo Toso), it established global trade relations, particularly in the United States.
The Fratelli Toso developed over 1500 different murrine patterns, classified into groups such as Cattedrale, Farfalle, Kiku, Millepiedi, Millepunti, Pavone, Spicchi, and Stellati. Until 1972, the glassworks regularly participated in the Venice Biennale and held annual exhibitions.
