Art Deco Opalescent White Glass Vase by André Hunebelle
By Andre Hunebelle
Located in Miami, FL
Art Deco mold-blown Opalescent glass vase by the firm of Hunebelle; round in shape and with a pattern of horizontal lines and angular indentations running all around the piece. Made in France. Signature: "A. Hunebelle" and "France" in the mold on bottom. Andre Hunebelle was born in Paris in 1896. He studied Mathematics at the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris, but these studies were interrupted by his involvement in the First World War. After the war, Hunebelle began designing pressed glass inspired by the work of Rene Lalique. He was friendly with Lalique's son . A Unique Style In 1927 Hunebelle exhibited his first collection of glass, which rapidly became fashionable and brought him popular acclaim. Although similar to Lalique's glass in many respects, Hunebelle's work maintained a unique identity and style. He was influenced greatly by his love of Mathematics and the prevailing fashion for what we now call Art Deco. The decoration of his designs was often very stylised or abstract and frequently used contrasting planes of glossy and frosted glass Andre Hunebelle created a range of vases, bowls, plates, ornaments and lamps and opened a luxury shop in Paris. (the address of which is variously quoted as being at the rue de la Boetie, Avenue Victor Emmanuel-III and the Champs Elysees) Etienne Franckhauser who also made moulds for Lalique and Sabino made the moulds for Hunebelle's glass. Much of his work, particularly in the earlier years, was in colourless glass, although he increasingly used coloured glass for his designs and is well known for his opalescent glass. He invented a style of port decanter...

Andre DELATTE French Art Deco Vase, Late 1920s
By Cristallerie de Pantin
Located in Saint-Amans-des-Cots, FR
French Art Deco vase by Andre DELATTE (Jarville, near Nancy), France, late 1920s. Mottled glass. Double glass. Purple and white enamels are applied between the two layers. Height : 13.8" (35cm), Depth : 6.3"(16cm). Signed "ADelatte Nancy" (see photo). André Delatte was born in Châtenois (Vosges, France) in 1887.Far from the world of the art, he becomes a great banker. Among his customers are the Muller Brothers. They become friends. Delatte visites the Muller's studios and discovers his passion for the glass, especially in its chemical aspect. He leaves the bank and studies chemistry. After his diplomas, in 1919, he starts a studio in Nancy (rue du Faubourg des 3 Maisons), where he decorates glass pieces made by the Muller Freres. Two years later, he builds his first furnace in Jarville, near Nancy. About thirty people work for him. Many ones come from the Daum's glassworks. The studios moves to Nancy (16 rue de Metz). The Faubourg des 3 Maisons studios are reserved to the work when hot. The company is called Verreries de l'Est what is in correspondence with the Delatte's ambitions. Soon, he compares with the most famous glassworks in Nancy. This success is explained by the Delatte's talent in business. He knows to choose the best men to place them at the right place in his company, such as Paul Maheux who manages the glass production. All the most beautiful pieces made in the glassworks in the thirties are the fruit of his work. André Delatte understands very well the Art Deco dawning and produces pieces in accordance with the taste of the people in this period. In 1926, about 60 people work for his glassworks and his headquarters are located Quai Ligier in Nancy. But the crisis...
