About the Item

Beautiful mosaic art pitcher by well known master ceramicist Jean Gerbino. Jean Gerbino (1876-1966) opened a workshop in Vallauris, France in 1930. He developed a mosaic technique of using small bits of various colored clays joined in sheets like a jigsaw puzzle which he formed in molds. The pieces were then fired with a clear glaze. Maker's mark on underside. According to various sources, it took GERBINO 40 years to completely develop this unusual and amazing technique and no one in the world has ever been able to duplicate the method. Although, many creators today continue to explore using that technique that Gerbino invented. Jean Gerbino is a French ceramic master born March 27, 1876 in Santo Stefano di Camastra in the province of Messina in Sicily and died December 6, 1966. His work is part of the Vallauris pottery appellation which includes the ceramic production of the workshops and manufactures settled in the region from the end of the nineteenth century. The particular process called "Gerbino" combines different techniques of mosaic and neriation (mixture of colored earth). The earthenware clays are colored in the mass by oxides. These clays are assembled flat to form drawings. The plates are shaped into molds. In nerership, the variability of land withdrawal is a major issue. This shrinkage is managed by the addition of oxides which make it possible to establish a balance between the different colors, provided to maintain a humidity as uniform as possible of the different clays. Extremely slow drying is necessary. After drying, the piece is cooked a first time, covered with a colorless enamel and then cooked a second time. "Jean Gerbino's ceramics, with their African-African-inspired air, bear the mark of the colonial exoticism of the 1930s that gave birth to them. This recurrent fashion brings them up to date. But with the passage of time, they also appear as timeless curiosities, endowed with strong decorative qualities. "(Ceramic & Glass Review, No. 80, January / February 1995).
