About the Item
Garniture of Three English Flower-Encrusted Porcelain Vases, c.1850 (probably Samuel Alcock & Co.)
A decorative early-Victorian garniture of three English porcelain vases, unmarked and probably by Samuel Alcock & Co., c.1845–55.
The modelling (flared, scalloped rims; quatrefoil feet with gilt sprigging; pierced scroll handles) and the palette of the painted oval landscape reserves are consistent with Alcock’s work of the period. The elaborate applied blossoms and leaves are in the Coalbrookdale (Coalport) flower-encrusted style.
Each vase is richly encrusted with polychrome flowers and foliage, framing hand-painted rural and classical scenes: the centre with a temple landscape, flanked by cottages and Gothic ruins. Gilt highlights throughout.
Tallest vase height: 35 cm
Companion pair height: 31.5 cm
Condition
Good decorative order overall. Small chip to the rim of the taller vase. Expected minor losses to some applied flowers/leaves and light flaking/rubbing to the painted panels in places. No structural cracks or restoration observed.
