Gilbert Méténier Green and Blue Matt Glazed Studio Pottery Vase, France 1920s

About the Item

This wonderful Art Deco vase is a rare piece by French ceramics artist Gilbert Méténier (France, 1844 - 1922). The vase is well sized, featuring two interesting handles smoothly arising from the main shape. The handles are shaped in an almost 90 degree angle, adding a certain sharpness to its design. The vase’s surface shows a semi matt finish in incredible tones of greens and blues, applied in an expressive manner. The piece is in a very good condition. Méténier experimented with numerous finishes colors, for which he used techniques such as iridescence and crystallization. He passed along the craftsmanship to his son Louis Méténier, whom succeeded to retain the renowned reputation of his father, even extending the production facilities resulting in a flourishing company with international sales. He experimented with different colors and various types of finishes, with at the company’s peak, around 11 to 13 both male and female employees. The company activities continued up to 1940, ending with the destruction of all the production molds by Méténier himself, in order to prevent them to be possessed by the Nazis.
