Hand Blown Vase by Copier, Leerdam 1960s
About the Item
Hand blown heavy weighted ball vase in clear glass over flowing to opaline at the top and green at the bottom by Copier, at Leerdam glass works, The Netherlands 1960s.
Glass maker and designer Andries Dirk Copier (1901-1991) is considered the most important Dutch glass artist of the 20th century.
He created both table and ornamental glass for large scale production. Unicas brought him international fame. Copier’s work was influenced by the most recent technical discoveries, resulting in personal contemporary designs. Early in his career he was appointed as designer at the Leerdam Glasfabriek (Leerdam Glassworks), where he was given the opportunity to experiment. Together with his team he discovered a wide range of techniques for both utility and one-off ‘Unica’ pieces, such as the use of tin crackle effects, enamel powders, and free formed bubbles and ribs. His designs for utility glass, such as the ‘gildeglas’, are still in production. His Introduced in 1925 as ‘Leerdam Unica’, these experimental glass objects are regarded as the predecessors of the Studio Glass Movement and show glass as an art object in its own right.
