About the Item

A beautifully crafted hand-hammered copper vase by the renowned Japanese workshop Gyokusendō, celebrated for its mastery of Tsuiki (槌起) copperware — a traditional technique with over 200 years of history. Originating in Tsubame City, Niigata Prefecture, Tsuiki involves skillfully raising the form of a vessel by hammering sheets of copper using a variety of iron rods (toriguchi). Rather than stretching the metal, the artisan contracts it with precision strikes, repeatedly heating and softening the material in a furnace during the process. The final stage involves specialized hand-applied coloring and finishing — each piece a unique expression of the maker’s craft. Gyokusendō is Japan’s most prestigious name in copperware, with works often held in museum and imperial collections. • Maker: Gyokusendō (signed) • Technique: Tsuiki (hand-hammered copper) • Origin: Tsubame City, Japan • Period: 20th century • Dimensions: Height: 16 cm (6.5 in); Diameter: 15.5 cm (6 in) • Weight: 510 g (1 lb) • Condition: Good vintage condition with minor abrasions consistent with age.
