Horst Kerstan West German Studio Pottery Tenmoku Vase

About the Item

Horst Kerstan (German, 1941-2005) was a leading ceramicist in West Germany in the latter part of the Twentieth Century. Inspired by Chinese ceramic traditions he brought a rigour to form and glazing but with a distinctly modern take on ceramic objects. He specialised in wood fired glazing with produces rich and subtle effects on a pot. He is a leading figure in German ceramics. This impressive and stunning West German studio pottery mallet shaped vase is by Horst Kerstan (German, 1941-2005) and is dated 1979. The stoneware vase stands on a flat unglazed base and has a wide facet shaped round body with a tall narrow funnel shaped top with a slightly everted rim. The body of the vase is decorated in rich brown tenmoku glazes imitating the early Chinese Jian ware of the Song dynasty. The vase has a slight metallic shimmer to the finish and has both impressed and signature marks applied to the base along with the date 1979. Provenance: Acquired in the UK Art Market. Excellent condition.
