Important and Monumental Louis-Philippe Verre Opaline Vase, circa 1830
About the Item
An important and monumental Louis-Philippe Verre opaline vase.
French, circa 1830.
Standing at almost 54 inches (136 cm) this impressive vase is in white opaline glass with perching birds and foliate borders fashioned in jade green.
Opaline glass, or 'cristal d'opale', is formed from a type of lead crystal which is then coloured by the addition of lime or metallic salts.
'Cristal d'opale' first appeared in the Empire period when the celebrated Baccarat factory was established. Baccarat rivalled and rapidly eclipsed the output of the English and Bohemian manufacturers, which until then had dominated the production of crystal glass. The taste for such coloured opalines was particularly marked in the Restauration period. The Journal des Dames et des Modes in January 1824 for instance remarked that 'On a donné aux dames, en cadeau de Jour de l'An, beaucoup de cristaux colorés en blanc laiteux dit opale; en rose dit hortensia, en bleu dit turquoise...'(S. Faniel ed., Le Dix-Neuvième Siècle Français, Paris, 1957, p. 126).
The technique of creating an opaline type glass by the addition of tin oxide was known in Venice since the early 16th century, but it was in France, from the 1810s, that it began to be applied to a lead-based glass or crystal and reached the height of its popularity during the reign of Napoleon III. Taking their sources from antiquity important glass manufacturers such as Baccarat, Creusot, Saint-Louis and Choisy-le-Roi began to make luxurious objects, employing metallic salts to create a myriad of colours. Perhaps the best-known colour was the luxurious light pink or ‘le rose gorge-de-pigeon’, created by the careful addition of gold salts. It is however the shades of jade green and yellow that our most highly prized by collectors because of their rarity.

View AllRestoration Period Console Table Made for King Louis-Philippe, circa 1830
By Jean-Christophe Fischer
Located in Brighton, West Sussex
A highly important restoration period maple and Amaranth veneered console table with patinated bronze female term supports, made for King Louis-Philippe by Jean-Christophe Fischer.
French, circa 1830.
This rare console table has a rectangular marble top above a frieze with two drawers raised on finely cast patinated bronze female term supports, a mirrored back and a plinth base.
The table is stamped ‘Fischer à Paris’ and with ‘LPN’ beneath a crown for Louis-Philippe Neuilly, and the number 13687.
The locks stamped 'Huby Fils Serrurier a Paris'.
This console table was formerly owned by Louis-Philippe, King of France, at the Château de Neuilly.
Louis-Philippe, Duc d'Orléans, was born October 6, 1773 in Paris, the eldest son of Louis-Philippe-Joseph, Duc de Chartres.
The Château de Neuilly was built for Marc-Pierre de Voyer d'Argenson. It was purchased in 1818 by Louis Philippe, who was then proclaimed King of the French on April 9, 1830. The château was looted and destroyed during the 1848 revolution. After his abdication, Louis-Philippe spent the last two years of his life in England.
Jean-Christophe Fischer (1779-1854) was an important French ébéniste and bronzier, specialising in making furniture, mirrors and chairs. He had an established business in Paris from 1820 until his death in 1854. During this time he produced furniture for the King Louis Philippe, for his Château de Neuilly residency, amongst other important commissions.
From 1820 to 1827 he was collaborating with Geoffrey Kopp under the name of Fisher and Kopp, he was then joined in 1839 by his son, who took over the company in 1848.
In 1837 he participated in the Exposition de l'Industrie Francaise, where he exhibited a cylinder bureau, a table and a pair of consoles, winning a silver medal for his work. According to the Exhibition's report:
"ses meubles se distinguaient autant par la perfection du travail que par l'élégance des formes; ils étaient en palissandre relevée seulement par des baguettes dorées ou en bois blanc. Un bureau a cylindre, une table de travail et deux consoles, nous ont paru les plus remarquables de l'Exposition."
In 1844, he also participated in the Exposition de l'Industrie Francaise where he received a Gold Medal for his work with ebony and bronze.

The spreading necks decorated with Greek key decoration are surmounted by domed covers and the vases are raised on baluster form supports put down on drum bases finely painted with panels stylised arabesque.
The Vienna Porcelain Manufactory was founded in 1718 only eight years after Johann Friedrich Bottger and Ehrenfried Walther von Tschirnhaus had succeeded in unearthing the secret of Porcelain Manufacture for August the Strong, Elector of Saxony. On May 25, 1718, Emperor Karl VI signed a "special privilege" awarding Claudius Innocentius du Paquier the exclusive right to produce porcelain in the Austrian crown lands. Production being almost exclusively for the imperial household and the court nobility.
During the rococo era, Empress Maria Theresia placed the company under imperial ownership and it was during this period that the manufactory began to produce the famous rococo genre scenes after Watteau. Under the management of Conrad Sorgel von Sorgenthal, the Vienna Porcelain Manufactory achieved an international reputation for its neo-classical style.
After the wars with France brought the manufactory to the brink of ruin, the Vienna Congress at the beginning of the Nineteenth Century gave porcelain from Vienna a renewed upswing. Many important personalities of the time, including Czar Alexander I of Russia...
