About the Item

An extremely impressive pair of Jacob Petit hand painted emerald green vases finished with 24k gold gilt fine detailing. On one side of the vase it depicts a hand painted panel with an assortment of summer flowers and on the other side a finely detailed gilding of a French guard. The vases are profusely and richly decorated in gilt. Imitation jewels are made to imitate Rubies and Amethyst that wrap around the base of the top of the vase. The vases are flared to the top surrounded by a band of corrugated gilt leaf like motifs. The main body sits on a low waist surrounded by a wide ring of gilt and two gilt leaf like handles springs from the lower waist. On flared base that sits on a square pedestal with winged feet. Throughout the vases are heavily raised gilding and jewelling. Jacob Petit a French ceramist was born in Paris in June 1796 and owned a porcelain factory and a workshop in Fontainebleau in Paris at 26 employing 80 workers. .An undeniable creator driven by the spirit of enterprise he produced a large number of decorative porcelain objects: crockery, vases, teapots, perfume bottles, incense burners, inkwells, paperweights, trinkets, clocks, interior lights, and even fireplaces. His creations are characterized by an inventive audacity. Imprints of eclecticism , they draw on all decorative repertoires. Although Jacob Petit was once criticized for his colors considered garish, he nevertheless turned out to be a remarkable colorist. He does not hesitate to juxtapose frank and rare hues, matte and shiny tones, to create a shimmering polychromy with almost infinite combinations. He seeks to render the material with realism (fabrics, jewellery, precious stones, skin tones, animal fur, petals and leaves of flowers, tree trunks, etc.). Spread generously, gold underlines the plinths and projecting or decorative elements. The whole produces an impression of gaiety. Its name remains attached to the originality of its production. Abundant and diverse, once judged to be exuberantly tasteless, his pieces are now sought after for their originality, the quality of their finish and the richness of their polychromy. His whimsical creativity is expressed, for example, in perfume bottles designed in pairs: a couple made up of a man and a woman in costumes from various eras or civilizations (Scottish; Spaniards; medieval nobles; Turks; Chinese ; American Natives…). A perpetually alert spirit, Jacob Petit filed several manufacturing patents . He liked to take up technical challenges, such as creating baskets in thin porcelain nets imitating woven wicker. He is interested, among other things, in the difficult to control process of gilding on porcelain. From 1834, he participated in numerous exhibitions, where he collected various awards in recognition of his pioneering spirit, combining audacity and creativity. The Report of the Central Jury of the Exhibition of the Products of National Industry of 1834 gives him an honorable mention, “not for the bizarre and difficult outlines which he gives to most of his pieces; but for the boldness of execution by which such difficulties are overcome . He adds that “all the decorators admit that Mr. Jacob-Petit 's innovations have revived the trade in ornamental porcelain”. Jacob Petit died in the same city December 5, 1868.
