About the Item

Stoneware vase by Jais Nielsen (1885–1961), created for the Royal Danish Porcelain Factory (Royal Copenhagen) circa 1921–1928. Executed in stoneware with a beautiful Sung-inspired glaze, the vase is decorated with relief motifs of biblical significance: a figural composition on one side and a motif featuring a vase and bowl on the reverse. Signed on the base with JAIS and the Royal Copenhagen factory mark. Perfect condition. Jais Nielsen (1885–1961) was a Danish visual artist and ceramicist, known for his expressive style and profound interest in biblical and religious themes. He was affiliated with the Royal Danish Porcelain Factory in the 1920s, where he produced a number of significant stoneware works inspired by both modern art and classical Christian iconography. His works are characterized by dramatic reliefs and a sculptural approach to form and decoration, often combined with experimental glazes inspired by Chinese Sung ceramics.
