About the Item

An exquisite Japanese cloisonné enamel vase of cylindrical form, worked in the manner of Gotō Seizaburō, dating to the Meiji period. One side shows a finely rendered gourd hanging from a vine with a dragonfly hovering nearby, all against a luminous light-blue enamel ground. The reverse presents a Chinese-style blue-and-white bowl overflowing with flowers, with a butterfly in graceful flight above. Both scenes are framed in oval cartouches. The surrounding ground is richly worked with geometric and textile-inspired motifs, including millefiori-style patterns and interlocking designs, executed in a dazzling palette of green, pink, brown, yellow, and blue. The precision of the wirework and the layering of translucent and opaque enamels exemplify the refined artistry associated with the great cloisonné masters of the late 19th century. Vases of this type are exceptionally rare, combining naturalistic scenes with bold geometric decoration. The balance of intimate detail with vibrant, abstract surrounds reflects the influence of Gotō’s workshop and the innovation that made Japanese cloisonné a celebrated art form worldwide. This vase is preserved in excellent condition, with its enamels remaining bright and clear. A true collector’s piece and a work of museum quality.
