Extraordinary contemporary Japanese decorative porcelain vase, hand painted in vibrant red, blue and green on a stunning bottle shaped porcelain body, with extremely intricate patterns and extensive use of gold, creating a beautiful palette with layers of transparent colors that can only be achieved by the old elaborate technique used in this piece. This piece is an exclusive signature masterpiece by highly acclaimed master porcelain artist and recipient of numerous awards for his exceptional porcelain work and unique gold and platinum work on porcelain. In 2016, the British Museum added a work by this artist to its collection of contemporary Japanese porcelain a large lidded jar in the Imari-Arita polychrome enamel tradition. "Four Guardians" or "Four Auspicious Beasts" are four spiritual creatures in Chinese mythology , guarding the four directions that date back to 5300 BC China. Each of these four celestial animals represent a season, color, element and Virtue. These four mythical creatures are dragon the guardian of the east representing spring, phoenix the guardian of the south represents summer, tiger the guardian of the west representing autumn, and tortoise the guardian of the north representing winter. They were introduced to Japan in the 7th century AD and their images of the "Four Guardians" are found on the tomb walls in Nara, built in the Asuka period (600 - 710 AD). This old technique that combines different elements of extremely intricate painting, with colors and depth that create a pallet that is flawlessly organic and makes the viewer wonder about the sequence of the artist’s work on this piece. The technique involves numerous challenges at different stages of painting as well as firing. For this reason and the enormous amount of time needed to create one piece, this technique is rarely used by today’s porcelain artists. The artist’s profile is available upon request. This exceptional porcelain vase comes in a custom made wooden case signed by the artist. Dimensions: H 10 in D 8.5 in “Fired-on gold.” The artist’s signature style highlights unique techniques for incorporating gold and platinum into the hand painting and multiple firing processes that yield a stunningly opulent look. The polychrome overglaze is fired at 800 degrees, followed by the application of gold and platinum that are fired at slightly lower temperature to maintain the luster of the precious metals. As a result, a single piece may undergo as many as 5-10 firings.
