About the Item

Kaj Franck is known for his functional, simple designs that are often referred to as the ‘conscience of Finland’, and his products are characterised by their use of colour without any decoration. However, he also left behind a large number of unique glass art pieces that make use of a wide variety of techniques. Filigree glass, which was produced at Nuutajarvi in the late 1850s, was modelled on the techniques of Venetian glass. The technique was discontinued, but Kaj Franck revived it in 1961 after starting work on it in the early 1950s. Nuutajarvi's filigree glass is made by inserting long, thin rods of coloured glass into a wooden mould with a slit in the middle, blowing transparent glass into the mould and fusing it together, and then twisting it. The colour and thickness of the rods of coloured glass, as well as the way they are arranged, are all chosen by Kaj Franck himself. This is a unique piece that combines glass with air bubbles and filigree glass. Like KF212, the base is raised in a mountain shape. Signed ‘Kaj Franck Nuutajarvi Notsjo’
