About the Item

Exceptional Art Glass Vase by Michael Nourot (1949–2015) A stunning large-scale art glass vase by celebrated American glass artist Michael Nourot, whose career helped define the trajectory of the American Studio Glass Movement. This richly hued and intricately layered piece showcases Nourot’s unmistakable command of color, form, and traditional Venetian techniques. Nourot’s artistic journey was both international and groundbreaking. He studied at California College of Arts and Crafts and quickly became a central figure in the West Coast glass scene. In the early 1970s, he worked alongside Dale Chihuly and James Carpenter to establish the very first glass studio at the now-legendary Pilchuck Glass School in Washington state—a pivotal institution in American studio glass history. Seeking to deepen his technical foundation, Nourot spent a formative year in Murano, Italy, working at the esteemed Venini factory, where he absorbed centuries-old Venetian glassmaking techniques. This classical training, combined with his American experimental sensibility, led to a singular style that blended old-world precision with modernist freedom. Throughout his life, Nourot's works were collected by a discerning and prestigious clientele—including U.S. Presidents, international dignitaries, and even the Pope. Each of his pieces is hand-blown and finished in his California studio, often using rare color combinations and layering techniques that give his glass a luminous, painterly quality. This vase is not just decorative—it is an important piece of late 20th-century American craft history, embodying the cross-cultural exchange between Murano and the West, and a testament to Nourot’s artistic vision and technical mastery.
