About the Item
Large Japanese Satsuma Moriage Vase with Figural Decoration, circa 1890
Offered for sale is a large and visually striking Japanese Satsuma vase, dating to the late 19th century, circa 1890.
This substantial vessel is richly decorated in the moriage technique, with highly textured enamel relief and intricate hand-painted detail. The central panels depict a lively courtly scene with dignitaries and attendants in traditional attire, executed with expressive detail and vibrant enamels in cobalt, green, ochre, pink and crimson tones, all outlined in fine gilt.
The neck is adorned with stylised dragons forming handles, rising to an elaborate scalloped mouth, further enriched with raised enamel foliate scrollwork and gold accents. The reverse features floral and geometric patterns in continuous moriage work.
An impressive decorative piece with strong sculptural and visual presence, exemplifying the high craftsmanship of Meiji-era export ware.
