Large Pair of Japanese Cloisonne Enamel On Porcelain Totai Vases Fish Swimming

About the Item

A pair of Japanese covered Totai enamel on porcelain vases. The wares are enameled with a polychrome design representing fish in the pond with flowers and plants made in the Cloisonne technique. The necks are adorned with cloud, foliage and butterfly ornaments made in the same design. Unmarked. Totai Shippo is the name given to Japanese cloisonne on ceramics, both on earthenwares and on porcelain. It has a similar appearance to metallic cloisonne ware, with metal cloisons sometimes individually filled with different colours however, some parts of the surface might be left decorated as normal blue and white porcelain, as is done on the inside of the lid of this item.
