About the Item

Large Russian Nicholas I Period Porcelain Vase Imperial Porcelain Factory Russian, c. 1830 Height 78cm, width 34cm, depth 30cm This outstanding antique vase, created around 1830 by the Imperial Porcelain Factory in St. Petersburg, Russia, during the reign of Nicholas I (1796–1855), is a striking example of Neoclassical design. Established in 1744, the Imperial Porcelain Factory quickly became Russia’s foremost producer of high-quality porcelain, merging European techniques with Russian artistic traditions. The manufactory supplied the imperial court and aristocracy, with its creations serving as symbols of luxury and prestige. This vase stands out for its impressive size and distinctive decoration. The factory began producing large presentation vases during the reign of Alexander I (1801–1825) for use in palaces and at official court events. Nicholas I continued and expanded this tradition, becoming a prominent patron of the arts, and under his guidance, the factory reached the height of its production. Vases from this era are regarded as some of the finest examples of Russian palace and presentation porcelain. While many of these works featured intricate reproductions of Old Master paintings, this piece is unusual for its more naturalistic and imaginative decoration. Formed in an amphora shape, the vase features a deep, vibrant blue ground that extends across the waisted flared neck and circular foot, both finished with subtle gilded rims. The body is richly decorated with polychrome foliate scrolls in green, purple, and pink, accentuated by two winged Pegasi. These mythical figures frame a circular cartouche with finely detailed gilt ciselé landscapes. The design is mirrored on both sides and is outlined by gilt bands and moulded anthemia and rosettes set against a white background. The vase is further enhanced by two gilt, winged caryatid-style handles, each supporting a floral basket. The skilful blending of smooth and matte finishes adds depth and visual interest to the piece. The lower section is elaborately gilded and moulded with rising palmettes, acanthus leaves, and rosettes, highlighting its opulent character. The vase rests on a square ormolu base, a typical feature of Russian presentation vases from this period. Boasting numerous rare and intricate details, this Imperial Porcelain Factory vase represents the pinnacle of Nicholas I-era craftsmanship and would make a remarkable addition to any prestigious collection.
