Large terracotta pignata pots w half glaze

About the Item

Large terracotta pignata pots w half glaze. Has two matching pairs as well. This terracotta pignata pot with half glaze, hand-thrown in Cutrofiano-Lucugnano, Puglia, dates back to the early 1900s and embodies the essence of "ceramica rustica." These pots, available in varying sizes, were traditionally used throughout southern Italy for cooking legumes, showcasing their practicality and enduring charm. Each pot features a unique half glaze, which serves both a functional and hygienic purpose, allowing for easy cleaning after use. This glazing technique was a cost-effective solution, as it avoided the expense of glazing the entire pot. The rustic surfaces are enhanced by a subtle charcoal effect, a testament to the cooking processes these pots have experienced over the years. To care for this charming collection, gently remove loose dirt with a soft-bristle brush, as cloths may snag on fragile surfaces. While washing with tap water is acceptable, distilled or deionized water is recommended for optimal preservation. Always use lukewarm or cooler water to protect the integrity of the terracotta. These pots not only serve as functional kitchenware but also as beautiful pieces of Italian culinary heritage, adding warmth and character to any home.

Large Glazed Greek Terracotta Vase
Located in Wormelow, Herefordshire
An impressive large Greek style vase, intricately crafted in terracotta and applied with a vibrant treacle glaze. Shaped like a trophy, this mid 19th century urn shares similarities with the marble vase attributed to prominent 2nd century Greek sculptor Sosibios in terms of shape and style, detailed with unique handles shaped like a swans neck. Unlike the Sosibios vase, the heart of this terracotta vase is largely plain showcasing the beautiful tone variation and lustre of the glaze. To the top, the vase is more intricate, detailed with a section of leaves and berries and stands on a socle carved with leaves to match the lower portion of the vase’s body. Thanks to its large scale and beautiful colour, this Greek style terracotta vase makes a striking statement piece placed on a pedestal or at the centre of a large sideboard...
