Large Vase Loetz Decor Phenomen Genre 2/187, circa 1902

About

After the great success at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900, in the first years of the 20th century, the Bohemian glass manufacturer Johann Loetz-Witwe recorded an increased demand for art glass of the highest quality. The new achievements in glass technology also allowed the glassworks to develop new decor variants. This vase has the shape of a calyx and is an example of the successful harmony of form and decoration; its pattern is a fortunate combination of two contrasting design elements. For the opaque background of the design, the colorless glass was initially underlaid with opal white glass. Then the workpiece was spun with silver-yellow threads, which were separated into lines in the rib model. The further blowing out resulted in the yellow dotted vertical drawing. At the neck of the vase, blue silver threads were then drawn into five even, combed feathers. On the large vessel, the blue, silvery shimmering drawing comes into its own and conveys to the observer the idea of a precious gem. The execution of this rare and very elaborate decoration required the highest mastery on the part of the glassblowers. At the base of the vase the accurately polished pontil is visible, through which the multi-layered structure of the glass body can be seen.
