About the Item

Handcrafted in Malta in the 1970s, this Mdina Glass solifleur vase exemplifies the studio’s bold and experimental approach. Sometimes referred to as the axe head vase, the form is defined by its angular hexagonal body and slim tapering neck. The vase combines layers of cobalt blue and cyan glass with a central rounded section of pink and white mottled glass, creating a striking play of contrasting tones and shifting depth. Each piece from Mdina’s workshop was individually shaped by hand, giving this example its organic irregularity and sculptural presence. Measuring 18 cm high, 13 cm wide, and 5 cm deep, it is both a functional solifleur/bud vase and a collectible object in its own right. In very good condition, with light wear consistent with age. A fine example of 1970s Mdina studio glass, valued for its vibrant colour palette and bold axehead form.

Turquoise Glass Squat Bottle Vase in Mdina ‘Ming’ Pattern, Signed 1979, Malta
By Mdina, Michael Harris
Located in Glasgow, GB
A rare signed Mdina Glass vase from Malta, dated 1979, exemplifying the studio’s bold aesthetic during its formative years. This decorative squat bottle vase is worked in the celebrated ‘Ming’ pattern, with swirling bands of turquoise blue and deep green glass layered over a base of sparkling golden ochre. The colours twist upward in irregular spirals around the rotund body, forming a richly tactile surface that captures the light beautifully. This form—low, broad, and full-bodied—is less commonly encountered, particularly in this scale. Measuring 16.5 cm in both height and diameter, it’s a commanding example of vintage Mdina glass...
