About the Item

A rare variation of mid-century British art glass, this ruby red glass vase was made by Whitefriars Glass, England, circa 1950s. Blown in their signature deep red glass, the piece is catalogued as Model 9381, known as the ‘Wave’ pattern. The form features a classic urn-shaped silhouette with a wide, rounded body, narrow neck, and gently flared rim. This example deviates from standard production: five subtle, angular embossed panels encircle the neck—a detail not typically recorded in existing Whitefriars pattern books. It may represent an experimental design, possibly a studio trial or prototype not brought into full production. Standing 22 cm high and 16 cm in diameter, the vase is in good vintage condition, with minor fleabites attributed to the original glassblowing process. The base bears a hand-etched code of unknown designation, further suggesting non-standard output from the Whitefriars factory during this prolific post-war period. A distinctive and possibly unique variant of a 1950s Whitefriars glass vase, ideal for collectors of English studio glass and postwar design.
