About the Item
A rare stoneware vase by Søholm Stentøj, handcrafted on the island of Bornholm, Denmark. The piece has a tall, flaring form and hand-painted vertical stripes in layered tones of brown, beige, and slate blue. The glossy surface reveals subtle variations from the high-temperature kiln process typical of Søholm’s high-fired stoneware range of the 1960s.
During the post-war decades, Danish makers such as Søholm, Michael Andersen, and Rønne Ceramics embraced stoneware as a medium that united modern form with artisanal tradition. This vase reflects that philosophy through its balanced shape, earthy palette, and hand-decorated surface.
Stamped on the base “Bornholmsk Søholm Denmark Stentøj 3635-2” and retaining the original paper label “Højbrændt Stentøj”. This label identifies Søholm’s high-temperature production, developed for strength, depth of colour, and expressive glaze character - hallmarks of Bornholm’s mid-century ceramics.
An authentic piece of mid-century Danish stoneware that combines craftsmanship, material honesty, and enduring form. Its warm, neutral colours pair beautifully with natural interiors, while the subtle glaze variation adds quiet movement and depth. A timeless object - both decorative and collectable - from one of Denmark’s most respected ceramic manufacturers.
