About the Item

A rare pre-patent version of Avedis's infamous interlocking vase. Comes entirely apart into separate pieces and can be rearranged at whim. Can be used as candle holder or vase. “After 30 years as a respected and eminent photographer, Avedis found photography no longer challenging and in the early 1990s decided to go back to his original studies and began designing and producing a collection of tabletop accessories. He focused his energies on creating original yet functional designs emphasizing compositions that featured interlocking forms for practical pieces such as vases, candle holders and salt-and-pepper shakers, among other items. In 1994, the collection won the prestigious International Design Magazine Award. Those objects were introduced in New York’s distinguished stores such as Bergdorf Goodman, Barneys and 28 leading museum stores, including New York’s Guggenheim, San Francisco MOMA, Museum of Contemporary Arts in Chicago, the Los Angeles Museum of Arts and San Diego Museum of Arts as well as the International Museum of Jerusalem in Israel and Kobi in Japan.” – excerpt from Avedis Baghsarian’s biography. Original Patent: Decorative container Patent number: 5240752 Abstract: A decorative article such as a vase includes a tubular core which is engaged by central openings in flat or three-dimensional fin members which are separated by spacers alternating with the fin members. The spacers may be separate units or integrally formed with respective fin members. The fin members in each article may be of similar or different shapes and in one or more groups and of the same or different thicknesses and in the same or different orientation. The bottom of the core member is closed by a flanged cap member and a retainer member engages the top of the core member to lock the assembly of fin and spacer members to the core member.
