Murano Glass Faceted Sommerso Vase, Mandruzzato c 1960s

About the Item

A large hexagon shaped red and yellow Murano glass 'Sommerso' vase by the glassmaking maestro Luigi Mandruzzato. Handcrafted in the 1960s in Italy, utilizing the revered 'Sommerso' technique—a bold method synonymous with the skill and artistry of Mandruzzato. Sommerso literally translates to 'submerged,' which is what makes this vase so unique and eye-catching: a layer of cranberry red glass sits above a layer of luminous yellow glass, wholly submerged within the clear glass body of the vase. The vibrant colors and organic shape of the submerged glass wonderfully juxtapose the hexagonal, tube-like form and thick glass base of the vase. A taller piece, measuring 19 cm in height and 5.5 cm in diameter. The vase is in good condition for its age and use; however, there is some subtle clouding within the inside of the glass that has developed over the years- it doesn't, however, affect the sparkle and luminosity of the piece though
