Neolithic Chinese pottery, standing 12 1/2" high and 12" wide from the collection of esteemed Columbia Professor and collector Dr. Philip Gould (1922-2020),
A Neolithic Chinese terracotta storage jar from 4000-3000 BC, with brown painted geometric decor and petite handles. Hand-crafted in China during the Neolithic period, this storage jar attracts our attention with its great age, soothing yet crooked lines and geometric motifs adorning all sides. During the Neolithic period, people of ancient China were farmers and tended to their animals. According to archeological findings, art in ancient China began to take shape around 7,500 BC and around 4000 BC, colored ceramic started to develop.
Our piece showcases a small opening with a small chip, measuring 3.5 inches of diameter. The neck is decorated with wavy motifs leading the eyes to the belly. Geometric patterns accented with petite hands in their intersections, adorn the piece's upper section. Two small handles flank the sides. With its nice history and uneven lines, this antique Chinese Neolithic storage jar circa 4000-3000 BC will make for a great decorative addition to any home and will be an undeniable conversation piece.
