Nupe Gourd Water Vessel, c. 1900

About the Item

Inspired by the natural world, nupe ceramicists fired this water vessel in the shape of a gourd. The vessel's varied textures and colors come from its utilitarian design. The parallel banding and arched motifs create a handworn texture that contrasts beautifully with the smooth lines of the form. The bottom was designed to rest against the ground, constant use left behind a distinctive pattern of white tones. The combination is a singularly sculptural object for the home.
