Loetz Pampas Glass And Metal Mounted Vase

Loetz Pampas Glass And Metal Mounted Vase
Czech Republic
Circa 1900
Unmarked
Height: 7.5 Inches, handle to handle 8.25 Inches
Condition: Very good with wear commensurate of age and use with some loss to gilt,
The Loetz glassworks existed in Klostermuhle, Austria, for just over a hundred years, starting from 1840. But its heyday was during the life-time of Max Ritter Von Spaun, grandson of the original Johann Loetz who had founded the company. Von Spaun took over the company in 1879 and ran it until 1908, a year before his death. He was assisted by Eduard Prochaska, his technical specialist, and together they invented, designed and produced a whole series of wonderful new types of glass, taking out several patents and winning awards at all the major world exhibitions during the 1890's and the first years of the new century.
The Loetz company were amongst the leaders in Art Nouveau design and expecially in irridescent art glass. "Papillon" glass, like the vase on the left, is sometimes known today as "oil spot" glass. Another favourite Loetz colouring was irridized glass with pulled trails called "Phenomenon" glass. There were irridized vases with ribbons of metallic colours winding over the surface, and many spectacular designs with applied trails of beautiful colours, or simply pulled out of the body of the glass to form handles or decoration.
About 1900 the company started collaborating with outside designers, and some great artists designed pieces for Lotz, notably Joseph Hofmann, Koloman Moser, Maria Kirchner, and Hofstatter.
In 1908 Loetz was taken over by Max Von Spaun's son, also called Max, and although it struggled financially (going through bankruptcy in 1911 and again in 1931) there were several great designers whose work was produced by Loetz during those years and through the art deco period. These included Adolf Beckert...

Unique Murano Glass Vase Stellato in the style Pollio Perelda for Fratelli Toso
By Fratelli Toso
Located in Tavarnelle val di Pesa, Florence
Splendid murano mosaic vase with a perfect color combination and complex mosaic technique.
The stellato finish is made by rolling canes of various color over a small blob of incandescent glass. The design is attained by using the glass scissors at the end and making flat discs with a star design. All these are then heated on a flat surface, in the old time was a stone so this technique still carries that name, lavorazione a piera.
It's heated so that it becomes an unique mosaic rectangular piece. It's then rolled with a glass disc that has the exact perimeter of the rectangular side. This makes the name that this technique is internationally known, Roll-up technique. The difficulty is to close into a cylinder the two other sides of the rectangle. After that the cylinder is closed on the opposite end, glowed to ge to the size, changing the working point with the punty technique (a puntello) and handopening to get the final shape.
An incredible sequence of glassmaking technique to get a special design.
The result is an intricate design of stars in an infinitive patchwork of color matching.
This is commonly known as Stellato vase, which was enhanced and studied by Pollio Perelda...

Richard LE CORRONE at CIBOURE Large Stoneware Vase, Early 1950s
By Ciboure, Richard Le Corrone
Located in Saint-Amans-des-Cots, FR
Large stoneware vase by Richard Le Corrone at Ciboure, France, early 1950s. High technical quality rotating antelope decor. Jarraila technique. Two elegant handles. Height : 9.8"(25cm), Diameter : 8.7"(22cm). Signed "R. Le Corrone" and stamped "RF Ciboure" under the base.
CIBOURE pottery was founded in 1919 on the Basque coast by Etienne Vilotte (1881-1957), Louis Benjamin Victor Floutier (1882-1936) and a man named LUKAS. In 1922, the date of the formal establishment of the company, Vilotte is the manager. From its inception, the style is clearly defined. A classical orientation, strongly imbued with the antique style and taking advantage of the neo-Greek wave. The characteristics of Art Deco are a source of inspiration as well as the regional style is an influence. The goal is clear: to offer high quality and decorative items whose forms are inherited from the ancient or traditional Basque containers. The sandstone reflects this enthusiasm for this growing area since the late 19th century.
In 1945, Rudolf Fischer bought the pottery on which it imposes its trademark in 1951 - RF CIBOURE - to replace the old - VE CIBOURE -. It will be replaced later by that of his son Max Fischer - MF CIBOURE -. He brings technical and artistic changes such as molding, baking more oxidizing and parts production utilities. This pottery owes its success, in addition to the decorative qualities and originality of its production, to an excellent marketing, particularly among Parisian department stores. Finally we note the names of its principal designers, the first and until 1922: Louis Floutier...
