Pair of Aesthetic Movement Vases Attributed to Susse Frères, France, Circa 1880

About the Item

A very fine pair of Japanese style vases attributed to Susse Frères and made in two patina bronze. Each vase in form of a patinated bronze ovoid body, subtly ornated in gilded relief with blossoming Japanese cherry tree branches laid out in spiral, which form the handles as well. Standing on elegant pierced and gilded bronze bases. The Susse company, a worldwide renown foundry, began to cast pieces as soon as the first half of the 19th century. Awarded medals several times at the famous Paris " Expositions des Produits de l’Industrie ", Susse brothers, Victor (1806-1860) and Amédée (1808-1880), were known since 1841 as makers of " Art bronze pieces for clocks, candelabras, statuettes, etc. ". The most well-known French sculptors gave their sculpted models to Susse in order to cast them, such James Pradier (1790-1852) who signed in 1841 the oldest known publishing contract for bronzes between publisher and artist. After the death of the two brothers, Albert Susse took over the business from 1880 until 1922. He developed so far the company as to open a new luxurious shop in Paris, at n° 13 boulevard de la Madeleine.

Elegant pair of trumpet-shaped vases attributed to A. Giroux, with flare neck in engraved crystal decorated with leafy interlacing and beads friezes. Removable, they are enclosed in circular pedestals in gilded bronze adorned with enameled geometric patterns, on which are seated two musicians putti. They rest on four toupie feet. Alphonse Giroux and Company, famous curiosity and luxury goods shop was situated in Paris, at No. 7 rue du Coq-Saint-Honoré and in business from the time of the Consulate until the end of the Second Empire. The company was founded by Francois-Simon-Alphonse and continued in 1838 by his two sons, Alphonse-Gustave (1810-1886) and André (1801-1879). The father became a close associate of the royal family and specialized in the manufacture of refined items for gifts. Kings Louis XVIII and then Charles X were both supplied with gifts for « The Children of France » by Giroux. These armchairs made of tinted wood are to be linked to another pair of armchairs executed by Gabriel Viardot, and now exhibited at the Decorative Arts Museum in Paris (Inv. 2006.105.1.2). They present a similar asymmetric design and an equal carving quality including the winding dragon on the back. (see picture attached) Gabriel Viardot career began as a wood carver and he produced small furniture, sculpturally carved with naturalistic motifs and animals. In the 1855 Exposition Universelle in Paris, his finely sculpted objects were well received. However, with the increasing importation of similarly produced Swiss and German articles, he found less opportunity for these and decided to innovate. G. Viardot succeeded to his father’s business in 1861 installed rue Rambuteau in Paris, circa 1870 he turned to the idea of producing “Meubles genre Chinois et Japonais”.
