Pair of Brass Syrian Mamluk Revival Vases with Silver and Copper Inlay

About the Item

A pair of brass Syrian Mamluk revival vases with silver and copper inlay Syrian, 20th Century 28cm high x 14cm in diameter. These excellent vases were made in the Mamluk revival, during which inspiration was drawn heavily from the Mamluk period, a time of great artistic and architectural production under Sultanate patronage. An effort was made to maintain much of the artistic heritage of this rich period, in particular its exceptional metalwork, of which these two fine vases are examples. Made in Syria in the early twentieth century, they are made of brass which has been inlaid with silver and copper, and they feature inscriptions in both Arabic and Hebrew. The words are set among rich and intricate silver and copper patterns with knots and vines, and the vibrant colours and skilful execution render these pieces very fine examples of Mamluk-style metalwork.
