About the Item

This decorative pair of Chinese famille verte porcelain vases dates to circa 1920 and exemplifies the richly colored aesthetic of early 20th-century export ceramics. Each baluster-form vase is topped with a domed lid featuring a red-brown foo lion (shishi) finial, a classic Chinese symbol of guardianship and strength. The lids are further decorated with lotus-petal motifs and floral borders, echoed in the painted bands at the vase shoulders. The bodies are glazed in layered green enamels with a stylized overlapping leaf or palm frond design, punctuated by delicately painted butterflies in flight. These butterflies, rendered in vibrant tones of blue, pink, yellow, and black, introduce a graceful counterpoint to the rhythmic verticality of the ground pattern. The famille verte palette, with its dominant green and lively overglaze accents, is both fresh and ornamental. Retaining their original lids, the vases can serve purely as decorative objects or be adapted into lamps. Their tall, slender form and intricate surface design make them ideal for use on a console, mantel, or display shelf in both traditional and eclectic interiors.
