A Pair of Finnish 1950s Vases Model Orchidéa by Timo Sarpaneva for Ittala

About the Item

This is the Finnish sculptural pair of vases, model Orckidéa 3568 designed in 1953 in polished crystal glass from Ittala. It comes with two tower shaped pieces, gently tapered with smooth rounded top. A steam blown recess in the middle of the sculpture forms a cave like a vase, for example for an orchid flower. To the story goes that this piece of work never was conceived as a vase. However, Sarpaneva was awarded a Grand Prix at the Milan Triennale in 1954 and also declared “The most beautiful object of the year” by House Beautiful magazin in that same year. Orkidea remains one of the most iconic designs made by the Iittala glassworks. From 1953, the year it was designed, it was produced until 1972. The higher vase measures: H 25.5 cm Ø 8.5 cm The lower one measures: H 15.5 cm Ø 5.2 cm The higher vase is marked: TIMO SARPANEVA IITTALA -54 (1954) The lower one is marked: TIMO SARPANEVA IITTALA 3568 The red Iittala label. ____________________ Timo Sarpaneva was an influential Finnish designer, sculptor and educator, best known in the art world for innovative work in glass. While glass remained his most commonly addressed medium, he also worked with metal, wood and textiles.
