About the Item
A striking and high quality pair of French 19th century Empire style cornucopia vases. Each vase features a gracefully fluted cut crystal horn rising from a finely chased ormolu mount, beautifully cast in the form of a ram’s head. The richly detailed rams display curling horns and elegant foliate acanthus scrolls extending along the back, all set atop a stepped rectangular plinth of dark green marble. The mounts are finished in a refined matte doré, complementing the jewel-like clarity of the crystal.
The upward-sweeping cut crystal bodies are vertically fluted and terminate in wide, scalloped rims, catching the light with remarkable brilliance. The horns are securely fitted into their ormolu bases, which rest on four discreet feet that extend from the underside of each ram. The green marble base is framed by a delicate gilt bronze border adorned with a continuous leaf motif and distinguished by its beveled edges and natural veining.
This elegant pair exemplifies the Empire Revival’s fascination with classical antiquity and noble materials. The combination of crystal, finely cast ormolu, and hardstone is characteristic of the refined decorative arts produced in mid-19th century Paris. Ram’s head motifs, often associated with imperial strength and Roman symbolism, were widely embraced in both the Napoleonic era and its 19th-century revivals, lending these vases a timeless grandeur and sculptural presence.
