Pair of French Faience ‘Agateware’ Amphora shaped Vases by Pichon, circa 1890

About

Pair of Amphora shaped agateware vases, stamped Pichon on the bases, circa 1890. The body and rectangular handles with a green marbling effect typical of this material (an effect achieved with mixed types of clay), and a contrasting band of lighter, finer pink marbling just below the handles. Pichon pottery originated in the town of Uzes in Provence. This marbleised clay is similar in appearance to Aptware, sometimes referred to as Agateware. Aptware, named for the small town in France where it originated, was developed around mid-18th century. The beautifully colored marbleised faience pottery was naturally inspired by the colored soils in that region. Aptware is mainly from Apt, but also other areas of Provence like Le Castellet.
