About the Item
A superb pair of Japanese cloisonné vases from the Meiji period, each finely worked in silver wire and rising 12 inches high.
The four-paneled design alternates between mythological and natural themes: kirin and tigers against soft peach grounds, and a coiled dragon with a single phoenix reserved on luminous baby blue grounds.
The phoenix panels bear the imperial paulownia crest, linking the vases to courtly symbolism and prestige.
Framed by elaborate gilt scrollwork borders, the vases display bold imagery, balanced forms, and refined craftsmanship, hallmarks of the Honda workshop.
Rare in both scale and subject, this pair embodies the grandeur and artistry of Japan’s cloisonné Golden Age.
