About the Item

A beautiful pair of Japanese cloisonne enamel vases from the school of Goto Seizaburo, Meiji period circa 1890. Each vase is decorated on a rich black ground with an elegant lotus pond scene filled with naturalistic detail. Large lotus leaves and blossoms rise across the surface alongside wild grasses and small seasonal flowers, rendered with delicate wirework and subtle enamel shading characteristic of the Goto school. Butterflies in soft blue and ochre tones drift above the foliage, while dragonflies and small insects are worked with fine precision. One vase includes a charming green frog perched among the leaves, adding personality and movement to the composition. The overall effect is painterly and atmospheric, evoking the stillness of a summer pond. Both vases retain their original polychrome borders at the top and bottom, executed with refined symmetry and excellent color. The interiors are finished in a bright blue enamel typical of high quality Meiji cloisonne production. The pair displays strong craftsmanship, harmonious design, and the naturalistic aesthetic that defines late nineteenth century enameling. A wonderful addition for collectors of Japanese cloisonne, Meiji art, or interior designers seeking a graceful and refined decorative statement. Excellent condition and ready to place. Circa 1890 Dimensions H 9 7/8 in. W 5 1/2 in. All measurements are approximate. ConditionOverall good vintage condition. Signs of age and wear. Chips enamel. Refer to photos.
