Pair of Royal Doulton Chine Ware vases

About the Item

This pair of baluster shaped Royal Doulton vases are decorated in the Chine Ware manner patented by Doulton. Doulton and Slaters patent, also known as Chine Ware was a decoration process that involved pressing pieces of linen, lace, net or other fabrics onto the soft clay shortly after it had come off the potter's wheel, leaving the corresponding impressed pattern behind. In the case of this pair, a very fine net fabric was used. Moulded pieces of clay (also known as sprigs) were then applied over the fabric pattern to be fired and later finished in the required colours. All the raised dots on the vases, (known as jewels) were applied by hand. The pair stand 320 mm (12.5 inches) high, have a diameter of 115 mm (4.5 inches) and are in very good condition, The incised initials EP on the base were the mark of Emily Partington who left the factory in 1912, so these vases would date from the period 1902-12.

  • Ceramic Vase Royal Doulton Chang Ware
    By Royal Doulton
    Located in Atlanta, GA
A glazed ceramic vase in slender spindle form from the Chang Ware series by Royal Doulton (England, founded 1815) circa 1920-30s. The vase was decorated with thick and dripping glaze in rich mottled polychrome colors. The glaze shows overall irregular crackles, a signature characteristic of Chang Ware. The base is hand-marked "NOKE", Royal Doulton in rectangle and initial HN (for Harry Nixon). Developed by Charles J. Noke (1858-1941), Doulton's Art Director, as part of his experimentation into Chinese flambé glazes during the 1920s. Fired at very high temperatures, they were introduced commercially by Doulton in 1925 in response to popular demand for eastern style ceramics. They were applied primarily by Harry Nixon (1886-1955). The name Chang Ware was used by Doulton in reference to the possibly mythical Song potter, Chang the Elder, although it bears little relationship to Song ceramics.
