About the Item

Beautiful pair of vases with Wisteria And Fish design on a green ground. Both marked with Crossed flags, so far not known to us what this means in terms of the maker. In Japanese culture Wisteria represents love and longevity, and we often see them used in art, poems, family crests, and formal kimonos. In one of the most famous kabuki dances, “Fuji Musume” (Wisteria Maiden) the heroine carries wisteria to symbolize the sentiments of love. Traditionally, goldfish, particularly Koi, have been used as a symbol of good luck and good fortune. Several ancient stories and fairy tales also include stories of goldfish granting wishes or making dreams come true.
