About the Item

A magnificent pair of 'pate-sur-pate' twin handled vases, circa 1880. The loutrophoros shaped vases each worked with scantily clad maidens interspersed with winged putti amongst foliate sprays, the neck handles and foot feature geometric gilt decoration, the bases with printed Sevres marks accompanied with 24-karat gold gilding. The technique of paste-on-paste , also called reported paste , is a difficult method used for the making of this type of porcelain . It consists of decorating a colored piece baked beforehand with white slip applied in successive layers, and modeled to create a design in relief. After firing, the effect is similar to that of a cameo , with the addition of transparency effects. It origins from the 19th century. Paste-on-paste decoration by Henry Hollins, a former apprentice of Marc-Louis Solon , on two Mintons vases , c.1882 ( Birmingham Museum of Art ) The development of dough-on-dough dates back to 1850 in France following an accident at the Manufacture nationale de Sèvres . Mr. Fishback, a ceramist at the national manufacture of Sèvres, tried to reproduce a decorative technique observed on a Chinese vase, but he did not succeed exactly and his experience led to what would become paste-on-paste or pate sur pate. One of the most renowned artists for his mastery of this technique is Marc-Louis Solon , who perfected the process at Sèvres and then at the Mintons factory. and was throughout his life the reference artist in the field. Before learning about the paste-on-paste process, Solon´s creations marked the artistic director of Sèvres, who then offered him a job at the national factory. There he met the director H. Regnault, and Gelly with whom he worked on this brand new process, which was then still in its infancy. Many means are made available to them to improve themselves, and they lack neither time nor money, which is a real luxury in such an industry. On the other hand, Solon creates some pieces during his free time which he signs under the pseudonym "Milès" in collaboration with Eugène Rousseau , and which can still be admired today in a large number at the Victoria and Albert Museum .as well as in the collection of the former Minton Museum. The Franco-German war of 1870 pushed Solon to emigrate to England, where he joined the Mintons factory in Stoke-on-Trent , which already employed many foreign artists such as its artistic director Léon Arnoux, or the French sculptor Albert-Ernest Carrier Belleuse . Solon trained apprentices in the dough-on-dough technique, such as Frederick Alfred Rhead 3 , Henry Hollins etc. They were the golden age of dough-on-dough in Staffordshire until the beginning of the 20th century.
