Phoenix Consolidated Glass Martele Screeching Owl Vase

About the Item

This 1926 Phoenix Consolidated Glass Martele Screeching Owl Vase is a striking example of American Art Glass from the 1920s, featuring four meticulously sculpted screeching owls perched on reeds encircling the body. The vase is finished in a beautiful dusty grey hue with a faint silver overlay, highlighting the intricate details of the high-relief design. The sculptural quality and subtle satin finish reflect the craftsmanship and artistic innovation of the Martele series, which was inspired by the French Art Nouveau movement while seamlessly blending into the bold and luxurious aesthetic of the Art Deco era. Phoenix Consolidated Glass Company, originally known as Consolidated Lamp & Glass Co., was a premier American glass manufacturer known for its exquisite high-relief molded glassware. Under the artistic direction of Rubin Haley, the company introduced the Martele line in the 1920s, a collection of deeply molded, satin-finished art glass that drew inspiration from French pâte-de-verre and Lalique designs. Haley, who also designed the celebrated Ruba Rombic series, was instrumental in blending cubist and streamlined forms into American glassmaking, creating some of the most sought-after Art Deco glassware of the time. This Martele owl vase exemplifies the series’ emphasis on organic themes and nature-inspired motifs, which resonated with the 1920s Art Nouveau revival and early Art Deco influences. The satin-finished glass with its soft, ethereal glow enhances the depth of the hand-carved details, making it a standout piece for collectors of Phoenix Consolidated Glass, Art Deco glassware, and vintage American decorative arts. In excellent antique condition, this vase exhibits light wear to the base, as expected with age, but remains free of chips or cracks.
