"Playing Pelota in the Basque Region", Exceptional Art Deco Vase by Ciboure

About the Item

Rare and exceptional, this Art Deco vase produced by Poterie De Ciboure in southern France celebrates the regional sport of pelota (or pelote), featuring six players in their handsome white shirts and pants. Each of the men is shown with a chistera, or glove, and they are playing in an outside court or "place libre," evident from the scored wall behind them. The Ciboure pottery works was located in the Pyrénées, and at its height was directed by Étienne Vilotte. This example was designed by R. LeCorrone. Among the tastemakers who "discovered" Ciboure pottery and collected it assiduously was Karl Lagerfeld, the Paris couturier; his collection was sold in 2007, attracting the attention of the New York Times. This example is especially fine, and is well marked.
