Rare Pair French Empire Rhyton-Form Cornucopia Biscuit and Gilt Porcelain Vases

About the Item

A Pair of Early Empire period French Rhyton-Form Cornucopia Biscuit and Gilt Porcelain Vases with Boar’s heads. These vases are modeled in the form of rhyton-style cornucopias, featuring detailed boar's head terminals. The bodies are crafted from a combination of biscuit and gilt porcelain, with hand-adorned 24K gilt decoration adding a luminous contrast to the matte white finish of the boar's heads and ornamental details. Each vase showcases intricately molded foliate and scroll motifs, highlighting the craftsmanship of the period. The bases are adorned with raised white decorations on gilt grounds, adding a sense of richness and refinement. The vases' rhyton form, inspired by ancient ceremonial drinking vessels, emphasizes their classical influences, while the boar's heads reflect a bold and unique design choice, likely symbolizing strength and abundance. Comparable pieces from the 18th century have been featured in auctions at Christie's and Sotheby's, attesting to their desirability among collectors. For instance, a Meissen porcelain rhyton-form vase with a boar's head terminal, circa 1740, was sold at Christie's for $18,750. France, Circa: 1790

Empire Style Porcelain and Gilt Bronze Napoleon Vase
By Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres
Located in London, GB
This Sevres style porcelain vase is beautifully painted with an image of Napoleon I on horseback. In this painting, Napoleon visits his men, some of whom are wounded, in what appears to be a military camp. He is seen, leading a group of mounted soldiers, on a white horse, respectfully doffing his bicorne hat to his troops. The painting is signed ‘F. Amblet’. This oval painting is given an elaborate gilded decorative border, reminiscent of a giltwood frame. These beautiful gold foliate patterns continue onto the base of the vase, as well as the top, where we see a pair of griffins. The vase is fitted with two handles, cast as double French imperial eagle heads, which spring from classical female masks, each wearing with winged helmets. ‘M.re IMPle de Sevres’ is painted its base. This antique Napoleonic vase...
