Rare Patricia Esch Large Red Vase, Early American Studio Glass

About the Item

Rare large vase by Patricia Esche is an important example of early American studio glass movement. It is stylistically similar to her blue vase with ruffled rim that is displayed as a part of "There at the beginning: Early Studio Glass from the Parkman Collection" by Corning Museum of Glass. Mostly monochromatic ruby red color showcases the fluid, organic shape of the vase, while light gradations of color in the lower part of the vase and some controlled bubbles help convey the density and the structure of the glass. The vase is signed and dated by the artist on the bottom. Patricia Esch (b. 1940) attended Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, where she received a BA in Design in 1963. She then studied under Harvey Littleton at the University of Wisconsin until 1965. Afterwards, she moved to Colorado and set up a studio in Denver; she was described as "The only woman glassblower within at least 800 miles of Denver" in the local newspaper. In 1973, Esch was honored by the American Association of University of Women. She had been a visiting craftsperson at Colorado State University and at Chadron State College in Nebraska. Esch was a studio glass artist until 1974, when she sold her equipment and returned to Wisconsin to pursue other creative avenues; she continues to make art glass as a hobby, and her work has been exhibited around the world.

Henry Summa Sommerso Helix Vase, American Studio Art Glass
By Henry Summa
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Graphic art glass vase was created with intertwining spiral coil helixes in dark red and pale-yellow glass fused in clear glass layer; the clear glass is encasing the deep, complex blue glass core in sommerso technique. The placement of helixes in clear glass layer creates an unexpected play of light and shadows, adding depth and definition to the piece. Minimal shape of the vase allows the bold flow of the pattern to take the center stage. The vase is signed and dated by the artist in etching on the bottom; rare, hard to find example of New Mexico studio glass would make a great gift to any studio glass or art collector. Henry Summa (1949-2008) has been working in glass since 1972. His early training in the glass arts was based on an apprenticeship at renowned Glory Hole Glassworks in New Mexico. Canyon Road Studio, known then as Glory Hole Glassworks, was owned by Peter Vanderlaan...

Jon Kuhn Early Sculptural Op-Art Vase, American Art Studio Glass, 1982
By Jon Kuhn
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Triangular faceted vase features a graphic pattern of ruby red, white, and dichroic glass encased in clear glass layers in sommerso technique. The body of the vase is cut and polished in triangular shape, exposing complex, colorful core; the subtle sheen of dichroic glass adds complexity and visual interest to a reserved color scheme. The vase is signed and dated by the artist in etching on the bottom; this rare, hard to find example of American studio glass would make a great gift to any studio glass, art collector, or modern design enthusiast. Jon Kuhn is one of the foremost glass artists in his field, creating highly intricate architectural glass art sculpture that has won world-wide acclaim. He received BFA from Washburn University in 1974, MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1978, and Honorary DFA from Washburn University in 2006. Jon Kuhn early work was done in molten glass, but currently he works in cold glass that is cut, polished, and fused, resulting in sculptures that take in surrounding light, then reflects and refracts it back; they appear to change color and radiance when viewed from different angles and lighting. Kuhn creates cold glass art in a variety of shapes and forms, but he is perhaps best known for his glass cubes which contain a colorful glass interior cased in clear glass. Kuhn’s work stands out for its complexity, its geometric forms, and for its mesmerizing presence. Jon Kuhn glass...
