MARIUS-ERNEST SABINO, THE SCULPTOR BECAME MASTER GLASS MAKER OF ART DECO
We are in 1878, Marius-Ernest Sabino was born in Sicily, in the town of Acierale (Italy). In 1882, his father, a wood sculptor, took him with all his family to France, where Marius-Ernest went to study wood carving.
Encouraged by his father, he will also follow an artistic training at the National School of Decorative Arts and Fine Arts in Paris.
At that time, electricity arrived for the first time in homes and factories (1879).
Fascinated by French culture and the novelty of electricity, Marius-Ernest Sabino moved from models of wooden chandeliers to new creations where glass became the primary element for diffusing light.
MARIUS-ERNEST SABINO FOUNDS HIS OWN FACTORY IN NOISY-LE-SEC, FRANCE
In 1900, the master glassmaker discovered the triumph of the Palais de l'Electricité at the Universal Exhibition in Paris. This is what will be at the origin of the creation of his own lighting factory in Noisy-le-Sec in Seine-Saint-Denis.
After the 1914 war, he went into partnership with another glass master from Romilly-sur-Andelle. He will, then, found some department stores in Paris, in the Marais district.
Marius-Ernest Sabino and his partner initially devoted themselves to their light manufacturing activities, but quickly expanded in the 1920s towards the design of decorative objects such as cups, figurines, statuettes, trinkets, dishes, lamps, or even vases.
It is clear that the creations of Marius-Ernest Sabino are part of a spirit close to the production of René Lalique, in particular with a bluish iridescence, which marvelously marries an opalescent crystal.
MARIUS-ERNEST SABINO: THE PRESS-MOLDED GLASS TECHNIQUE
For the manufacture of castings of his pieces, Marius-Ernest Sabino uses the same techniques of pressed-molded glass for the casting and finishing of his creations. However, with the recent advent of electricity, opalescence (half-crystal) is becoming dominant in his productions.
At the time, Sabino featured a blue iridescent crystal in its production, the result of adding arsenic to the vitrifiable mixture.
Sabino was not the first glassmaker to appropriate light in glass, since the Daum brothers and Louis Majorelle would also make it their spearhead. In some of his pieces, the glassmaker applies color in the mass with gold or enamel.
Marius-Ernest Sabino will also use acid to polish the crystal, which will have the effect of transparent lights with an interesting interplay of materials between matt areas and polished areas.
1925: THE TRIUMPH OF OPALESCENT CHANDELIERS AND VASES BY MARIUS-ERNEST SABINO
If the vases of Marius-Ernest Sabino did not have the same fame as those of Daum, certain pieces such as the "Idole" lamp have become famous creations.
His notoriety will be made in particular in 1925, within the framework of the International Salon of Decorative Arts in Paris.
It is at this time that the glassmaker will be the most imaginative and the most productive, playing mainly on the relief of the glass. His chandeliers will find a prominent place in the famous movement of the time: the architecture of light.
In 1925, Sabino will show a particular interest in iridescent blue crystal, which will be called "golden glass" in Great Britain. Later, in 1930, he extended the opalescence effect to obtain yellow, mauve or smoky shades.

Subsequently, Marius-Ernest Sabino was entrusted with the creation of the luminous decorations for the liners "Ile de France" in 1927 and "Normandy" in 1935. Having become famous throughout the world, he opened points of sale in Oran, in Algiers, Tunis and Constantinople; and will be entrusted with the light installation of the decoration of the Shah Palace in Persia in 1936.
The name of Marius-Ernest Sabino will forever be linked to the glass technique of pressed-molded glass, which he concretizes in his various activities, in particular his glass busts.
Marius-Ernest Sabino died in 1961, leaving his son the legacy of his know-how. This one will maintain the activities of his company until 1975, and will resell many molds of the sign to an American firm.

Lucille Sévin is a French sculptor, active from 1920 to 1940. Lucille Sévin made many chryselephantine sculptures in the Art Deco style, using materials such as bronze, silver or gold, and ivory. His work was skillfully implemented and distributed by art publisher Edmond Etling. For a time, Sévin was artistic director of the Etling company. Her husband, the sculptor Jean Théodore Delabassé, also worked for Etling.
Sévina also worked with glass, ceramics and porcelain. Her sculptures of dancers in frosted and iridescent milky glass like Isadora Duncan of 1925 were made for Etling in a glass factory in Choisy-le-Roi.
Sévin exhibited at the Salon of the Society of French Artists in Paris and became a member of the Society. Lucille Sévin won the bronze medal in 1932 and the gold medal at the Universal Exhibition in Paris 1937. She also exhibited her works at the Society of the Salon d'Automne in Paris.
