Saqqarah Vase by Nanae Umeda, Printed by Egizia for Sottsass Associati 1995
About the Item
“Saqqarah” vase designed by Nanae Umeda, for the glasswares series 'Handle with Care'. Serigraph (silk screen) printing by Egizia, produced and directed by Sottsass Associati. It's design sits well within the Memphis school of Post-Modernism. A brillant and high quality work that will stand the test of time.
This is a double-thickness blown glass vase (query, glass production by Rosenthal) featuring hand-silkscreen decoration in shiny enamels, contrasted with a 24 kt gold and enamel overlay. The whole then baked in a kiln to fix the finish to the glass.
Dimensions:
17.5 cm Diam
30 cm Height
It was produced as part of a series of print-on-glass pieces titled 'Handle With Care'. The designs by various young designers, drawn together by Sottsass Associati studio. The glass is a high quality double-thickness production (assumed by Rosenthal but I have not been able to confirm).
The designs were printed by hand using a silk screen method at the workshop Egizia, in Tuscany. Over six decades this workshop developed expertise, proprietary materials and methods for screen printing on on glass. They were sought out for their expertise to work hand in hand with designers on this collaborative project.
This vase exemplifies the multilayered collaboration and production methods and the facilitation of inter-expert design that have made great Italian design possible since the 1970s. With quality as it's core principle, this Italian collaborative design process ensures experts from various fields can come together to facilitate production to a standard none could have achieved on their own.
About the designer:
Nanae Umeda was invited to this collaboration as a promising young designer. She worked at the office of Ettore Sottsass in Italy from 1993 to 2000. She is the daughter of famous Memphis design collaborator and designer Masanori Umeda.

Monumental Signed Shunichi Inoue White and Rose Ash Glazed Vase 1978
By Shunichi Inoue
Located in Melbourne, AU
A wonderful example of the work of master Japanese potter, Shunichi Inoue. This vessel dates from his Australian residency.
We love the potency of this very simple form - it has a powerful presence, connoting stillness, composure. For some reason it makes me think of the moon. It has the same still, calm, abiding presence.
Shunichi Inoue studied ceramics at Kyoto City University of Arts 1969-75. He travelled to Australia to lecturer in ceramics at the Bendigo College of Advanced Education in Victoria, Australia where he stayed for three years.
He returned to Australia in late 1984 as a visiting professor and again in 1993, when he made an extended stay.
He was an active exhibitor and had an important influence on Australian pottery...
