About the Item

Astonishing Seguso Vetri d'Arte white Murano glass handled vase. This piece was designed with a stunning "scavo" effect on the glass and on the metal stand. This piece is marvellous as it is a Murano glass vase with the shape and the appearance of an ancient Roman transport amphora. This is evident from the two handles on top, the opaque white, the wide opening and the pointed bottom. This iconic piece is attributed to Flavio Poli, who has been the artistic director of Seguso Vetri d'Arte in Murano from 1937-1963. The "scavo" effect is translated into excavation glass, thanks to the particular finish alike to the antique Roman glass brought to light from excavation. The characteristic feature of this type of glass, introduced by Cenedese in the 1940s and then developed through the years, is an overall surface rough mat finish, predominantly grey but with splashes of various colours. The uneven appearance and opaque colour are the results of the reaction of salts and mineral oxides scattered over the surface of the object during the last phase of work. Flavio Poli (1900-1984) was an Italian artist, known for his designs in glass. Born in 1900, he was trained at the Istituto d'Arte di Venezia, then began work as a ceramicist. In 1929, he began working for the company "I.V.A.M." (Industrie Vetraie Artistiche Murano) as a designer of glassware. He was appointed artistic director of Barovier, Seguso & Ferro (later Seguso Vetri d’Arte) in 1934, where he devised a style of 'submerged' glass, with several transparent layers, one over the other. Within three years, he was a partner in the company. He left Seguso in 1963. From 1964-1966 he led the artistic glass division of the Società Veneziana di Conterie e Cristallerie. Poli died in 1984. A number of his works are in the Murano Glass Museum, the National Gallery of Victoria, Australia, and MoMA in New York.
